Multi-layer containers

29 April 2025

The production of blown plastic containers with multilayer technology is an advanced technique that allows you to obtain bottles or bottles with several layers of different materials, each with a specific function. This process is widely used in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
How multilayer production works
The most widely used technology is stretch-blow moulding or extrusion-blow moulding, but with a co-extruder system which works with several materials simultaneously.
The basic process
Feeding of different polymers: each in a separate extruder.
Co-extrusion: the polymers are melted and joined in a co-extrusion head, forming a tube (parison) or multilayer preform.
Blowing: the parison/preform is blown into a mold to take on the desired shape.
Cooling and extraction: the container solidifies and is ejected from the mould.
Advantages of multilayer technology
Material savings: recycling materials are encouraged where virgin materials are not essential.
Optimisation of the use of materials: for example, the inner layer can be used to safeguard the content, the outer layer as a UV barrier, while the middle layer gives robustness without wasting valuable additives.
Aesthetics and functionality: opaque, transparent or coloured layers depending on use.
